Don't know what to perform?

Have you magicians ever encounter this problem?
You got a packet of cards, your friends requested for a trick, you took out your deck but your brain went blank.

Reason being, you know so much trick and you don't know what to perform at that point of time! =/

Have you people actually encountered this situation before? :)
If yes what did you guys did to save yourself from that situation?

I ever experienced once, I ask my spectators to choose a card, and after that, my mind got stuck and I don't know what trick to do for him =(

If you know any tricks that require a set-up, make sure you keep that on you. That way if someone asks you what to do, you'll have a deck set up, and it will be the only trick you can do :D

I hope that helps.

I learned many tricks and i note the best one of em' that hits hard, are the most effective and that suit my style, in my cellphone. And whenever someone ask me to do something, i will most likely do a card transpo. But if my brain goes blank, i take out my cell and goes through each trick and choose one to perform ...

nice idea there, so those tricks that u record down in cell, are they impromptu magic or magic that requires minor set ups?

Perhaps you know or are worried about too many effects. It has been my experience that it is better to master 3 hard hitting impromptu effects so that you are ready at a moments notice, borrowed deck and all.

When you try to remember 20 effects using your cards or theirs sometimes it is too confusing. When I am a party or someone throws me a deck...I do the same 3 effects that I normally do.

I open with Biddle, then i do a Sloppy Triumph, and end with Stigmata or Clutch by Oz Pearlman.

This is generally enough to fry the audience and get people to say, "Wow..this guy is the real deal and is good. We should hire him for one of our parties or events."

oh my, your top 3 tricks are the same as mine! HAHAHAHAH ^5 dude.

Anyways! okay, like u said, u will always show these 3 tricks right, but what if one day you are showing group A these 3 tricks, then a week later, group B + Group A approached you and ask you for some tricks, so what will you do?

Are you still gonna perform the same 3 tricks or are you gonna change your whole routine? =/

Now i've develop this phobia that, I will only perform tricks in front of a group of people, that first time meeting me, or have never seen me perform before, that kinda sucks isn't it =/

I have never encoutered this problem, I think the reason-being is because I practice so much, I don't even think about the next move I am going to perform it just happens. I am not saying this is your problem but possibly lack of practice, something I would suggest is make a list of your in repetoire tricks at the certain time and go over that list once a day. Practice everyone of the effects at least once, and if you feel you need more work on a certain one do it several times in a row.
I hope this helps.

Like Rev above, I have a standard set of a few staple tricks I always have on me, I'm always loaded up, even when I'm going out to a club or whatever. I have LIT set, I have my spoons and I have a dupe in the deck to do my 2 card transpo.

Outside of those, I always have bent coins on me, Simplex Killer from ANATE is set in my wallet and I've recently re-banded a folding coin and have been killing with that!

It's just having a solid routine, but being able to mix it up a bit when you need to.

If I take your example of already performing for Group A, but a week later am performing for Group B + one or two from Group A, yes...I will normally throw in two or three other effects that weren't originally seen by Group A members but I still use my 2 of my 3 staple effects as well.

I hope that answers your question some.

I do what Dee does as well. I know my 3 impromptu card effects are Biddle, Triumph and Clutch, but can throw in rubber bands at a moments notice, a mismade dollar or will sometimes have a packet trick or two set in my wallet ready to go. This packet trick just always goes with me everywhere and is set. Another is using my ring and doing Ring Thing by Garrett Thomas.

I am not a guy who loads up 20 effects on me just to go out of the house but always have enough on me two do 3-5 effects with cards, bands, and a packet trick. If I am doing a paid show..then yes...I have two close up cases that go with me.

What effects have you been using it for, Dee?

Normally, if I see an opportunity to perform, or if someone asks me to, it's usually either ring flight (Ring Flight Revolution is always on my key ring) or a signed coin bend (never leave home without my QB2). Those are two organic effects using spectators' borrowed objects that I can get into without people realizing I'm actually "performing," and that always get great reactions.

I perform a total of 20 card effects, and I know those 20 card effects very well. So if I do take out a deck, it could be anything, depending on my mood, my audience, and my environment. The past couple months, though, for impromptu performances, I've been performing Timeline 2.0 quite a bit.

I used to have this problem, and then I would just use the little tricks that I automatically remember... Like a trick where you show a card ex. (The 3 of clubs) put on the table face down and then take the next card and then the one in my hand is the 3 of clubs... Very simple trick that I will always remember and most likely keep using. My point is that it is practically the same trick I would do over and over... But now I keep an arsenal of tricks

- .44
- biddle trick
- twizted
- timeline 2.0 box steal

And a couple more... (And if you guys know anymore good tricks, pm me... Thanks.)

But back to your problem... This is common of most of us, I'm guessing... But just have a arsenal of tricks... Or a goody bag. (Yeah that wasn't funny) anyway like I said arsenal of tricks is great...

Hope this helps you out...

All of em' , i always carry a "card shark" case with me in which i keep all my gimmick. I usually look for impromptu tricks or tricks with minor setups when someone approach me ...

that used to happen to me before...

but now I have a set of tricks in my mind...and just perform them when I am ask to do something...

but for people who are just starting out...you should have 1 trick always in your mind...a card trick that you can perform with borrowed deck and anytime...just before you end that trick, you´ll remember the next one since your mind and hands remember more as soon as you do the first..

I have 4 routines with cards that I know inside and out that I always perform.

There are a few that I use from time to time if I am trying to make an impression that require a setup howere they are a fairly simple setup up that takes a fair bit of culling. These effects are staples of my show so all I need is a few minutes before to set them up out the back.

As for an impromptu thing having something thrown onto me I usally just do my reading tells routine with either a 10 card poker deal closer or my variation on Diplopia depending on what I feel like doing at the time and what I have presented the effect as.

I'm so impressed by you guys actions, it seems like you guys had so much EXPERIENCE with performing to people. So do you guys perform magic to strangers or to your friends or mates?

Cause in Singapore its rather wierd to approach a group of strangers and perform to them, cause its not in our culture. =/ or rather, Magic is still not the highly appreciated 'thing' for Singaporeans :(

So I can only perform my tricks to my camp mates. And I feel that I really really need to expose myself to different people, I yearn for a reaction like what we see when Daniel Garcia, Wayne Houchin perform to spectators. Till now I've never experience one before. :(:(

well I do perform regularly...in fact every friday and saturday I go to a place here in Leon where there is a lot of bars and restaurants...so I feel I have some experience...

magic is also not highly appreciated here in Leon and everybody thinks of magic as a joke with hats and rabits...But I am doing my best to change that and I am determined to do it...and I think if that´s the case with you, you should do the same
