Ending and beginning.

alright, so some of you guys might remember that a while back I posted some threads about wanting to get away from just cards and get into coins and mentalism. But, sadly, I discovered cardistry around the same time and got into that instead. after about 6 months of doing cardistry, while I admit it is fun, I must say that is extremely pointless and overall, useless. so, I have decided, after hearing of releases from eric jones and ponta the smith, to get into coins and/or mentalism. My question is, which do you think is more effective, mainly for performing live? I have tried a few basic coin techiniques and I must say they are extremely hard. But, when done properly, look like freaking magic. I havent studied any mentalism so I dont know anything aboutit at this time.

All help is appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. Unfortunately, coins can be a lot harder to get into that cards. This is mainly for two reasons:
1. There is a lot less you can do with a few coins than an entire deck of 52 cards with identical backs, easily concealable cards, etc.

2. There is SOOOO much more material out for cards than coins. Really it gets a bit ridiculous.

I'm really interested in Ponta The Smith's Dvd because that just looks really amazing and I'm a huge fan of his work.

My advice to you would be to AVOID COIN GIMMICKS. At least until you get a solid foundation of impromptu effects you can do. Gimmicks can be great but you don't want to require them.

I started cardistry at about 5 months and i started coin magic about a week ago.
I suggest you to pick up noblezada's in the beginning there were coins.
To begin is great!

I'm just starting to get into coins, myself. Bobo's is where I'm starting, as it's the coin worker's bible. I find that it's a LOT more technically difficult than cards; however, it's relatively comparable (in difficulty) to cards with regards to routining, scripting, etc.

The main thing I perform is mentalism. This seems like the easiest of all in the realm of 'magic', and technically the sleights/methods are. However, it is by far the most difficult to pull off convincingly (believability, reactions, etc). Your performance/character/audience management/all the other stuff that usually gets ignored by most people in other genres of magic is critical for the successful execution of mentalism.

As such, although it will seem like the more daunting task, I would suggest coins to start out with. It'll actually be easier to accomplish competently than mentalism (in my opinion, obviously). Also, the things you'll learn while performing coins (and cards, or any other types of magic) will help for when you later decide to get into mentalism (if you choose that route later on).

On a side note, I wouldn't consider your time in cardistry a waste, as long as you learned from the experience. And, at the very least, you know not to invest any more money in cardistry material; a good lesson learned through experience, I would say. :)

I think it's a good idea. There is almost too much cardistry now-days compared to magic. (Just think about how pointless it actually is.) I mean, cardistry is fun, but for laymen it's nothing compared to magic. You can't really make a living just by flourishing.

I guarantee that you will do coins and mentalism and then jump right back to cards... Its just a way to keep you from being bored with same routines... You're at phase one.
