Rick - it sounds like you have a full and interesting life, which means you have potential to be a great magician...as being interesting out of magic lends a helping hand. Also, you have a good grasp on what you are offering, both in strengths and weaknesses - I hope to come to Magi-fest in the upcoming year, do you attend? If so, perhaps we can create a chance encounter...as long as you promise not to put me in an arm bar!?
Actually, my cop friend, he does it ALL - he does parlour, cups and balls, linking rings, coins, cards, dice stacking...you name it - it can be done - but it is hard - but for him, most of the stuff are toys he plays with, and then puts them down. The stuff he does for pay - polished.
It is hard to decide where to focus your passion, especially when much already exists in your life...that being said. What are your goals with your magic - well, you said a hobby that pays for itself - sure, but what do you ENJOY more - not what are you good at - I think it's REALLY cool that you rock at balloon animals - but do you enjoy them....could you do them all day for free? Do you want to do close up magic in the same way? Perhaps you want them all in your life...well, you already know the formula - how did you get awesome with balloons? Do the same with close up.
My only real advice still - is keep thinks seperate - balloons, kid magic and adult are all different branches - you will better serve the crowds and your "hobbies" (profession, lol) if you do. You can offer them all as a service, but overlapping them, from my observation and experience, can be difficult, as you discovered.
My door is always open if you would live more direct advice for close up magic - cards, coins, you name it - as for balloons and working with children....I bow down to you.
