So I'm kind of new to this site. I was just wondering if anyone would care to share any stories of mess ups? Everyone does it at one point or another. I know there was a thread very similar to this in the cerca trova section but it's closed as you may know. I apologize before hand if this thread has been brought up before. I couldn't seem to find an open one to post in.

Thoughts on how to maintain your cool during a performance would be useful. And if anyone has improv'd the situation to enhance the effect, let your stories be heard.

Best way to maintain your cool is to be cool. If you want to enhance an effect you need to sit down and work with it for awhile. You could come up with something new while worrying how cool you look.

When I first started card magic which was five years ago back in my elementary school. Of course, students did not take my magic seriously, and everything changed by the time I am a freshman in high school. When I performed, I have all these shakes, and fumbled. So, as I started performing my first trick and I shuffled, I lost control of my hands and all of the cards went flying through the air. But, I am sure every magician goes through this experience before and it's only because we are learning, growing and on the road to success.

TIPS
-practise as much as you can in front of the mirror or if you have a video camera. It is important to have the routine you want to give to your audience to prevent nervousness, shaky hands, etc
-Have confidence to yourself is the key and you will get confidence by your practise
-You may have to deal with hecklers, so I suggest you to look in the forums on how to deal and come up with a comeback
-Just before you perform to the people whenever at lunch time (it is the best solution), make sure you wash your hands to clean off your sweat and having a fluid performance
-Any tricks you perform should have a patter. A patter can be a lifestory, and try to add humour
-Character: do you want to be a funny, mysterious, dark, serious, or unhappy? Be yourself and add humour
-Make sure that you are having fun. If you are having fun, then the audience will be having fun

Best of luck.

changed my username. Umm, I said i was new to the site, not magic. I know how to do what you guys were saying, I just thought it"d be kind of fun to hear about some fumbles that people have had. Sometimes mess ups make miracles.

Last thursday, I planned on doing a sealed prediction effect to this guy. I wrote down the guys name, that he was going to freely select a card and sign it, blah blah blah. and i gave him the envelope on that friday to hold until i had class with him. When i did the effect it worked perfectly. But i was going for a double whammy here and was going to end with a signed card to pocket. this was where things messed up. I had told him to go through and find his card.( he was seated and looking at the cards atm) I had done the side steal right before and when i turned my hand(palm away from him, the card popped out of my palm. SO i took two steps back, and planted my foot on the card. He did not see and about that time he said the card wasnt in the deck. I promptly lifted my foot. It killed.

Rather nice save, if I do say so myself.

My failures are rather dismal as the effect that I did, I do all the time and to stuff it up seems impossible. It happened twice but I performed CTM and had the wrong card in my mouth. No idea how...I just did.
