Gig for the Deaf

hey guys I have a gig next week and I wanted to run some effects by you to see what you think. I will be signing and magishing at the same time so I want to do some effects that don't necessarily require both my of my hands to perform.

here is what I have so far:

Chicago Opener
Fiber Optics
Mismade Bill
Liquid Metal
Pressure
D'lites
Extreme Burn 2.0
French Kiss
Identity
Card to Pocket

If anyone has any other ideas let me know

Note I HAVE done magic for a deaf audience before and I am able to sign and understand sign language. The above routines are all ones I have practiced and have down or will have down by the end of this week

if you flourish, throw some in there. For some reason the deaf community loves it. I too have spent a great deal of time signing and at events with deaf or hearing impaired. its challenging to sign and perform but its fun.

i used to attend community events a few times a month for class. In between conversations i would often flourish just as a habit. It was very strange at first because they are so used to watching for hand movements that all eyes darted to mine like a magnet. I showed them some magic but many people were more interested in the cuts and flourishes, like a new way for hand poetry. if you know about sign stories and sign poetry then you understand, its an art or a beautiful display that they appreciate much more than hearing people.

Thats really interesting, I never considered that... I guess I better start learning lol

Ever think of having an assistant who could sign for you while you are performing. Just food for thought. That is probably what I would do. Our church has 3-4 adults who sign complete 45 minute sermons so if I ever had to perform for a deaf audience, I'd go straight for one of those people and request some help and split the gig money.

What kind of show is this? like walk around? Stage? close up?
also i feel that signing may take away from the magic itsself, (that is if you have someone signing) i know shoot ogawa and apollo have cultural exchange, which deals with tricks that need little to no interaction to perform.

If I couldn't get a person to sign for me, I think I would do a completely visual routine with appearances, vanishes, color changes, cut and restored rope, etc.

I did a bit of magic for a couple (he was deaf and she was a professional interpreter). It was very interesting. (misdirection was very easy because they have to look away to see the interpreter)

Depending on your scenario, I would hire a professional interpreter for the event and add that cost to your fee. There is a big difference in a professional interpreter verses someone who does it casually (as you probably already know).

Hey guys thanks for all of the feedback! here is the info for the gig:

It's a free gig I am doing as a favor to my old sign language teacher back in High School. The event is a fair for the sign language students, along with anyone who has deaf family members. The people there will be a mixture of both hearing and non hearing people. I will not be using an interpreter as I will be signing myself. I was one of her advanced students back in High School and that is why she asked me to do the event. I am perfectly fine with signing and doing magic at the same time, so I'm not too worried about that. I will have a little booth where I will be doing close up magic

The main question was, in addition to the effects listed above, are there any others you think would work well in a situation like this?

Thanks!
