How can the art advance if we are not advancing!?

Furthermore being you, a human can be pretty boring, Have you ever sat down and people watched? People are boring as heck.

Can I just say that as an actor, I do this all the time. I can't stop myself doing it, actually. It is one of the most interesting ways I can think of to pass the time, if friends aren't around. People are incredibly interesting, and watching people especially so.

I know as well people can be interesting in the sense of studying how they conduct themselves, the contrasts of people and the such. But I was just talking about Joe Schmo works in a cubicle for a living and just general human life. Everyone has a habit a routine if you are going to break the routine be something more then just another person. That is what I was trying to state Prae.

I have no idea where you are getting the notion that characters are clowns, I think the miss-understanding is of what a character is. It’s an exaggeration of your own personality. Like my character extends my love of mythology, superstition, supernatural, and theater. I am going to be a little over the top when I perform for people then others, but does that put me in the same league as a cartoon character? Excluding of course Sylvester the Jester.

Furthermore being you, a human can be pretty boring, Have you ever sat down and people watched? People are boring as heck. Spectators see humans everywhere, If you actually go up to a spectator and show them an effect and hook them in, your audience deserves something more and expects it as well because you just broke there mundane world. You have to keep them outside of their reality and suspend their belief by drawing them into your world. This can only really happen if you understand your persona and character.

AMEN to that.

Build a persona or character? Once you actually have guidelines to what your persona, character, and style whatever you want to call it you will be able to more effectively use your creativity to develop effects that you will actually use.

Hmm

If you turn magic you are still considered a magician, I mean you are still entertaining people to pass time when the cable is out. That is what most magicians I have seen around do, its called street magic and being yourself and not a magician by your standards. Get what I am saying? Most modern street close up performers just turn tricks and lack any of the essentials that allows people to connect emotionally.

ARTTT!!!!??
Please explain to me what art means to you.

Agreed, furthermore Manson has a Persona/character, which helps him make songs his own. That is why magicians need one.

Keokesilverfang i agree for the most part, Your performance style should be an exaggeration of your own personality, But all in all it is still YOU. I guess i should have been more clean by what I meant by that. What i am trying to say in order to really make an impact on your spectators you need to get on the same level as them. Connect with them on a personal level.

i dont think that we as humans are boring at all. Everyone is different in their own way. It is your job as an entertainer to take your auidence on a ride threw your own world. it is the 21st centry and people dont believe in magic and hocus pocus anymore. You need a new way to relate to the always chainging audience. I am suggesting people get away from these cartoon style performances. you said you were in to theater and mythology, that is great, and your perfromance should reflect on it because it is you.

As far as magic being an art i strongly believe so.

Lets start by looking at the definiton of art from dictionary.com

"the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance."

Is magic not an expression of creativness? Do we not bring the spectators into our own world or realm. Do we not consider our tricks to be appealing and to our spectators they should be more than ordinary significance.

Magic is not just a skill, its a method of entertainment. Like Painting a picture every brush stroke is there for a reason and a purpos, Every movement and every line of patter is thre for a reason. When you add all the paint strokes and colors together you get a painting. when you put your patter slights and presentation together you get an illuision. Both forms of art.

First I do not believe art can be defined, but who cares about the definition of art create your own art for now.

Magic is a form of expression okay sure I will swing with that.

What is being conveyed here? is this an art or just a great show of finger dexterity? I mean its magic right so this video is a piece of art yeah?

FYI I agree with you Luka I am just illustrating a different point.

Thanks for reminding me of that video.

Thanks also to everyone who participated, and who is going to participate.

How can one advance without proper teaching? If you took myself for example when I first started magic around 13 years old, I just went online and bought gimmicks and effects. I never got a core understanding of magic and what it should bring to the spectators eyes, instead I wasted roughly $500 on useless effects that I never use except for one.

After awhile I started to understand more and more about what I could be performing instead of showing. I borrowed my friends books on performing and getting gigs etc. and I made a huge breakthrough. I performed each effect like my last one, trying to make it big and as jaw dropping as the one before. I still haven't found what I am looking for in terms of magic, I do gambling demonstrations, mentalism, money and cards effects. I love them all and trying to put a finger on one is like a quadriplegic wrestling a silverback.

If you have still read this then maybe you get the point I am putting across. Without others guiding them into right direction will never advance anything other than maybe your frustration for people not advancing our "art".

i dont see why people need to put so much deep thought into "advancing the art". Just go do some friggin magic. on youtube, on facebook, on whatever the f**k you want.
The art doesnt need your forums to advance it.
advancement in the art is always doing magic...its the freshness of the effects....sometimes cards and coins won't do on everyone...i think if we all went back to the basics we would stumble on a bunch of new magic is waiting to be let out...we just have to research and find it....i'm sure every move vernon did wasn't the only of its kind no matter how great he was...its something we all can do......just research and use our imagination.....

which was basically the point of my post.

go. do. magic.

learn, perform, improve.

the goal is to stop throwing ideals around on forums. really, the only real way for one to get better at magic is to perform magic. Not to be bombarded with all the hate and anger that goes around in forum land.
