two weeks ago, I purchased "the classic force" by paul green, Im waiting for it to come...

Why? Is A basic sleight I need to learn if I want my magic to be as smooth and "magical" as I expect it to be....

three days ago I sold some games to be able to buy "identity" by daniel madison...

Why? Because some of the gimmicks there were going to be usefull in my routines...
what happened? I made a lot of rants about the difficulty of the book here on the forums...

So, I have currently like 35$, money I made because I played with my band at a party, so I was planning on buying exile but then it happened....

The most beatifull and Smooth move I have seen in all my life.....

THE GRAVITY HALF PASS....

I have watched it like 7 times, and I am still fooled! wow, then I readed some reviews, and the sleights taught there, man, Is just what I need for My routines!...

So, Maybe I am not making a point with all this, but I think it would be nice if we stop and think to ourselves: Do we really need to be buying every new effect just because is cool? and I say this because a fellow magician recently (Im not going to say names) told me...

" Hey Im going to buy Exile and Thread!" I asked him why "why? Because they look amasing!" And then I asked him, Have you thinked some routines for them? he only said, "nope, Ill just do them when somebody asks me for a trick"

yep, just like that... So right now Im going back to basics:D

Cheers!:D

you first want the good basic stuff and then you can move on buying tricks that look cool. So yes, definitely get the paper engine. the gravity half pass will take some work, but in the end it's worth it. THe effects in there are amazing and I say just about all of them are impromptu. However, to me exile seems totally amazing and this is something really rare because this is done completely on the spectator. Haha i dunno, I would really try to get this as a pre order before the price goes up.

I agree with what you're saying, but some people aren't very creative and just do tricks the way they're taught instead of coming up with a way to make them their own. Personally, I like learning slights and figuring out things I can do with them, but with something like Exile, I honestly don't know how much you can change that up. It's a really great closer I think - elegant and beautiful.

yeah I know, But as I was sayin to a friend in school, its a great trick, but I dont see it getting into my routines you know? for example, the only dvd's I have bought from here are Dangerous and Panic, and that's because I know I can use the sleights from dangerous, and Panic fits perfeclty into my routines(Im still thinking of a way to incorporate into a routine instead of using it as a only one trick)jaja.

So as I said, Exile looks like a great trick, but it doesn fits my style... Maybe later when I have some more money ill buy it....:D

Yeah I think you've hit a great point RDC. A *lot* of people just buy the latest effects that T11 sells and yeah whoop I can do them now! Without ever thinking about looking for the best effects, or the right effects. To be honest I don't really care - as far as my mindset goes, most of these people should know better, especially here they're surrounded by people who do know better, so if they haven't realised by now, let them be, they're just one more magician in the world I'm better than, and really, bad magicians help spread my magic. The forum is peppered with advice like this, all the time, from the guys who know their stuff, so the advice is here to be taken you know?

It's great that you've come to this realisation - back to basics is good. The Paper Engine is very good, I've been working on the GHP for many months now.

Yeah, it does, but I don't really care, cause in the end, I'm an actor so by that virtue alone, magic and performance at large is never about me. To be quite honest, I couldn't care less whether I was better or worse than anyone, I was merely stating it as an observation, not an arrogant boast. That rule of performance is what I've been living with for years, so I don't really care if I sound like an "important" magician, you know? It's enough for me to know, and not care how it sounds, at least not to other magicians. Only reason I said it is because, firstly, it's something I say dismissively, and secondly, if the lessons are there to be learned and you don't learn them, well, sorry but...

Well, there is a difference between someone that NEEDs new material and someone who WANTs new material. Many people want these new effects because theyare "hot". They are just being released and are great looking. You need to sperate yourself from that desire and simply ask yourself why you "want" this item. As you are taught in Buhdism, I believe, "Rid yourself of all worldly desires."

Some people however, will occasionally need a new peice for an effect. Perhaps, they have a gig at a halloween party and realize that Control would be perfect for their repetoire. Now, these people usually are the ones who greatly respect their art and know not to bite off more they can chew. there are differences see?

Thank you... There's hope after all. Magic is about magic, I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Magic isn't about having the latest and greatest... It's about being the latest and greatest.

Yeah, but all we're saying is that the majority is in the former, the great majority, who do need to look at why they want something, notwithstanding that there are of course some who get it for entirely reasonable reasons. I lol'd at the Buddhism reference, and at Sean...
