I Need Inspiration

As you may of saw in my last thread about my presentation, that I was looking for ideas. Well, here is one idea I thought may be interesting to research and look into, but I need help :p

I was going to compare and contrast Houdini and David Blaine, how they perform magic and also do performance art. How they both have done the same and different types of stunts... I was just wondering what else I could look into which is linked to all this.

What is this for exactly? An essay? A debate? Just for fun?

To compare and contrast them, you will probably want to talk about their abilities to self-promote. The reason why they are both so well known is because they are great self-promoters. Also, you may have to keep in mind that while most people have heard of each performer, not everyone actually knows who they are and what they've done.

You can also talk about how Blaine often just does Houdini's stunts and modernizes them. The other day I watched a video where Blaine took punches to the stomach from Kimbo Slice and mentioned that Houdini actually died from a punch to the stomach. In fact, I've seen other performers just compare themselves to Houdini and do their routines as a homage to Houdini and mention him directly in the act.

Anyways... let me know how this works out for you. PM me if you wish. I have my English Degree and have missed intellectual thoughts on popular culture since graduating.

I have to do a 30 minute presentation which has to be sort of a debate... But has to be academic. Which is why I am going along the lines of comparing and contrasting history with modern, and the two types of magicians.

Thank you for your input :) - I could mention how Blaine could be influenced by Houdini and look up on that.

It's also worth mentioning that Blaine is simply doing today what Houdini did nearly a hundred years ago, making magic modern. In Houdini's time (worth noting his real name, Eric Weiss, in your presentation as well) magic was not really a pop-culture subject. Houdini's stunts and presentations took the art of magic to a, at the time, unseen level, which is exactly what Blaine did with Street Magic.

Look for Houdini's story on YouTube, the History Channel did a great documentary on his life.

Best of luck,
C
