I'm going to be successful because...

Tonight was a pretty normal night as far as busking is concerned. Not a lot of traffic, but the few shows did turn tip. Then this family from Australia came by. I doubt I'll forget them anytime soon because of what their youngest son had said to me.

He had told me that he was interested in dancing, and his brother was an actor. He knew that he was going to be successful at it because, like me, what he did came from his soul. He could tell that I was passionate about what I did which is why he wanted to stay and watch my show for so long.

That's when it hit me. There's a thousand and one reasons to get out of bed and do what we do, but if it doesn't come from the heart then the motivations need adjustment. It's not the skill, the clothing, the opportunities, or anything else that drives ones success. It's the passion that makes or breaks you. Passion isn't something that can learn. It isn't something you can download or buy from a magic store. It's something that you just simply have to have. Passion is a delicate thing. It can be spoiled by negativity, or wasted by procrastination. That's why it's imperative that we surround ourselves with the people who will support us, love us, and drive us to be successful. We need to cut out and avoid negativity and above all never lose sight on our dreams.

That kid may have only been 10 years old, but he gets it. He knows what drives our business. What drives mankind. That kid possesses a secret knowledge that many magicians in our field fail at their jobs because they lack possession of it. Passion. Do you have it?

Thank you for this post... It's really a waste of time to really add much to it because you really hit the nail on the head. So thank you for that reminder.

A life without passion isn't worth living. Well said William.

That kid was able to identify WHY he reacted the way he did to you. Most people can't put their finger on it, but passion is the difference between a good magician and someone that is a great magician.

My question is how do you (not just William, but everyone else) CONVEY your passion to your audience?

It's no secret. That kid just hasn't be subjected to the world yet. Kid's do things because they enjoy doing them, adults do a lot of things because they have to. What you say is true though, few things are as powerful for attaining success as passion and love for whatever sport/hobby/profession/interest/art form it may be.

It's heart warming, sure, and passion it's a great thing to have, but there are plenty of passionate failures. Success requires far more than can be summed up in a bumper sticker sized phrase. One needs passion, business savvy, networking, social skill, timing, and most important, luck. There's plenty of people out there that deserve to make out big, but they just haven't gotten their break.

There's no formula for success that actually works all the time but I wouldn't be so dismissive. Passion is a huge part of it.

Passion is definitely required. It takes passion and dedication to push through the times when performing sucks and keep getting your name out there, otherwise you'll just be steamrollered by all the other people out there. But passion doesn't pay bills. Passion doesn't equate to being unique or even interesting. Passion doesn't even guarantee that you'll be good at what you do. Passionately repeating the same mistakes just makes you more efficient at making that mistake.

Think about it. There's tons of performers (particularly) that are passionate about what they do, but they still suck. I can think of a couple magicians, a couple local bands, a few comedians .. and those are just people that live in my city.

Passion is essential but it has just as much potential to destroy you as make you successful.
