Magic Con

Hey guys. So everyone knows that magic-con is the biggest and best magic convention offered every year and I really want to go. The only problem is... my dad. Sadly, I'm 13 and can't go all the way from Nashville to San Diego alone, nor do I have enough money, so I have to find a way to convince my dad to let me go. But he isn't the biggest supporter of my magic and feels like it would be better if he put his money elsewhere. Between shows, Christmas, and My Birthday, I think I could probably pull together just enough for registration and my plane ticket. But I won't be able to pay for everything and my dad is very cheap with money. So I need your suggestions on how to convince him that Magic-Con is a worthwhile investment and he should let me go,

Thanks. :)

Just sit down with him and tell him how much it means to you. Plain and simple. Show him how much it means to you. He has got to relate to something that means a lot to him.

I hope I helped, I don't think I did, but that is my advice.

You definitely helped. 100%. Tell him how much magic means to you more than anything in the world. Be sincere about it as well. What convinced my dad to letting me go is that I offered to get some of the money for myself to go. When you offer up your OWN money, it shows responsibility and that you are becoming a mature, young man. Once he sees that, he would be a fool not to let you go. I also had to make other agreements with my father, but that is what set the icing on the cake. Also, make sure you do really good in school. When you have good grades and you are in good standing with them, it shows your father that you can make up all schoolwork you miss. These are the things that really help show that you are becoming a wise, young, and responsible young man. :)

there are two issues with your statement... 1) there is no way of knowing it is the " biggest and best magic convention offered every year" since last year was the FIRST year... just saying, faulty logic
2) Your dad is in charge. You raising up "some" of the money isn't gonna change that he has to shell out a butt load for the rest. My advice to you is this. Forget about going this year, i know that sucks and you dont want to hear it, but if your really dedicated to going to Magi-con then start saving now, and by Magi-con next year you will not only have enough money to cover all your expenses, but you will also be a full year more developed and experienced in magic and get much more out of the convention. Your dad will have a lot harder time saying no when you have the cash in hand, not promises and hopes. Plus showing the dedication to the idea for a year will work on his heartstrings. In the meantime, there are plenty other great conventions with far smaller fee's. Look into one day conventions you dont have to spend the night at, or lectures, or even guest speakers at local magic shops. Trust me, that way when you get to magi-con and see all the faces from those smaller conventions all together in one place, it will be so much more impressive.

just my two cents.. and dont think im not being sympathetic, i also really want to go to magi-con, but i recognize that its not the best financial decision right now so i have to wait. Trust me, its not going anywhere... actually.. it might be, who knows next year it might be closer to you... or me : )

I live about an hour away from Nashville. So if you need like a 'buddy' for Magic*Con we could fly out from Nashville together. As for the money, work your butt off and show how much it means to you by raising the money yourself.

If it's not about the money, then talk with your father about why he doesn't want you to go, and then respect his wishes.

My advice, don't worry about going this year. Trust me when I agree with jrobarts05, and say that it could be better for you to do other things. There is no way that I would have been able to convince my parents at that age. Your time and age will come when you can make those choices. Though in the end, you really aren't missing a "once in a lifetime opportunity" because you will be able to catch up as time goes by. For now enjoy making your dad happy and proud by getting good grades, doing your chores without being asked, and getting a long with your siblings (if you have any). These might sound like hard words at the age of 13, but trust me, when you are 25 like me, you will agree.

Thanks for all your advice but I wish I could've worded this differently. It's not really 100% about money but it would help sell him if I did have some money so it wouldn't be like I'm just asking for something and he would see that I'm responsible and I actually am willing to work for this. But it's mostly about showing him how important it really is to me.

yeah that would be cool :)
