My Little Experiment

Ok so I conducted a little experiment. I know a lot of people love to perform with decks fresh out of the box. I for one cannot. Even though I love the feel of a new deck i cannot perform straight out of the box, I need to break it in first for the tricks I perform.

My Experiment:
I wanted a new deck but yet it had to be broking in.
So what I did is right after a shower I opened a brand new rider pack and started playing with it.
I did this every day for several weeks between 5-20 mins per day.
After the period I played with the deck, I put them away and didn't use them again until the next days shower.
What happens is while your in a shower, your hands go through a step by step cleaning process:
-water
-shampoo
-conditioner
-body wash
- and for the guys shaving cream when shaving your face

All of these are cleaning products and by doing this the deck never once got dirty through out the several weeks. So the deck is nicely broken in yet looks like I just opened a brand new deck. Also a plus the deck will smell just like your body wash over the period of this.

Now i am not saying do exactly what I did to break in a deck. This was just my experiment. If you want your deck to last longer always use clean hands. the deck I used looks new, fans new and does everything a new deck does but is broken in just the way I like it.

Give it a try for a new deck, try maybe 3 days and see the difference.

I always clean my hand thoroghly before using the deck but unfortunately it picks up dirt when the cards fall down.

The worst problem with this is the moisture your hands absorb when in the shower. It takes a while for your hands to really dry out enough to not transfer lots of moisture into the deck. I find more problems caused by humidity than by dirt, and most of my "dead" decks can be revived by simply letting them rest for several weeks so they can dry out. Interesting idea though. My hands feel nasty and greasy now that I just got out of bed and read this... haha.

I heard if you put a broken in deck into the freezer it keeps it nice

I usually sit around and faro shuffle a deck for about a half hour after I open them (with clean hands) and then run through some basic flourishes (I'm not very good...) and then put them in the box for a day or so. They usually come out about where I like them and last a good while.

The point of this thread is just to tell you guys always keep your hands clean if you want your decks to last for a long time. I am not saying do my experiment over several weeks. it is true you can break in a deck within a half hour depending on what you perform. This was just my test of how long they will keep clean and act brand new with clean hands.

In an old issue of MAGIC Magazine, Joshua Jay detailed how to 'instantly' break in a deck of cards straight from the box. It's based off an old concept, but not many people are familiar with it. It's a simple matter of doing the Inflated Deck, bringing the cards to your lips, and blowing warm air in between the cards. I believe it's commonly referred to as 'airing the deck.' When done properly, the cards acquire a perfect worn-in feeling and the deck becomes more manageable to perform various sleights and flourishes.

I usually use a couple decks in a show. A few springs and I'm good to go. I will have to look into the J. Jay idea.
