Need advice on books.

Hey guys,

Have an interesting situation going on here. When I started seriously studying magic, I went on a spending spree to start my little library I have going on right now.

Here's the dilemma I have going on.. So I bought 'Pure Effect', and 'Absolute Magic', as well as some other great books. I used this list as a reference guide.

Now, I've been thinking about selling 'Pure Effect' and 'Absolute Magic' to buy many other essential books in magic, such as finishing off my 'Card College' set, as well as some stuff by Harry Lorayne, or other great books.

So, what is your advice? Should I keep Derren Brown's masterpieces, or sell them for books that I would not be able to afford for a while?

It depends what you really would like to study. For overall performance and theory books, I suggest the Fitzkee Trilogy. It's a tough little set that you can get for pretty cheap. BUT, like I said, they are TOUGH to read. I suggest getting a subscription to Genii if you are interested in that kind of thing. I don't think selling books is the most preferable. Keep everything you have. Get rid of the DVDs

Personally I think that it is best to keep all the books you already have and get your library as large as possible. You never know when you need to refer back to something and more often than not it is in that darn book you sold!!!

Why don't you sell some other stuff instead?

A while back I was privileged enough to merely look through a copy of Absolute Magic. If I had, personally, I'd be buried with it.

I love 'Absolute Magic' and 'Pure Effect', luckily I got them as a combo new for 400.

I really don't have anything else to sell (or would sell). I have the first two volumes of Card College, all of Tarbell and AoA, Doc Easons DVD'S, The Paper Engine, almost all of Darwin Ortiz's books (just missing Scams and Fantasies) and the list goes on.

I've got 30 books in all, but was looking at Apocalypse, and Lorayne's other works. As well as the rest of Card College.

I know there's a lot more books out there for me to read, it's just a matter of being able to afford them

Uhh I'd hold onto them books but that is only because I'd study them inside and out. However since they are out of print? Selling them now would probably give you the most profit. I guess you should sell them if you feel you are ready to depart with them, just keep in mind once they are gone, it may be difficult to reacquire them.

As a book collector and borderline obsessive hoarder, I have a hard time selling books, even when I have multiple copies.

However, sometimes it has to be done.

From a value perspective, I am amazed at how well the Brown books have retained their value even after reprints.

Of the titles mentioned, these are the most difficult to obtain, and may remain so due ti Derren's popularity.

Card College is a tremendous resource, however it will probably always be available on both the new and secondary markets. Harry is still doing occaisonal reprints, but I think he may stop releasing further printing of his classic collections.

Who knows what the digital age will usher forth next and how that will impact the monetary value of books in general or a singular title, specifically.

But, for now, the strong money investment lies in the Brown books.
