okay, so about 10 minutes ago i found out i was representing the magic club at our school and i would get a table and people would walk up and check stuff out and see if they want to join.

so ive got some stuff im gonna do

flourishes: quick attention attracting things like flic, springing, ribbon spread, and a few cuts

tricks: 2cm, untitled, french kiss, this n that, time machine, biddle, little acr, couple sandwich items and acaan. basically simple, quick, hard hitting tricks and really attractive flourishes, oh and something like the trick contributed by jay sankey to the AOM dvd except w/ sharpie, not fire

now obviously, you guys dont know what material i own but im looking mainly for impromptu, hard hitting, fairly quick stuff.

all suggestions will be appreciated

thank you all who contribute in advance,
Pitambar Dayal

I wouldn't kill yourself on doing effects. You need to do some good marketing.

Have pamphlets or fliers describing the club. Have some magic books sitting out and some of your DVD's (not to sell), just for eye candy.

You could even have a lap top or small TV playing a magic video off to the side of your table.

You should have a few effects to perform as well as some flourishes to bring people over.

People want to know, "What am I going to get out of joining this club?" This shouldn't turn into a long performance behind your table with people just watching you.

Prophet is good for this situation. You say "Look money. Now it's a bigger amount" Just like that. However, if your only looking at card shtuff, Ambitous card is nice for this. A lot of the time, when i need a really quick trick, i glance the top card (say the 4C). I spread the deck and say just touch the 4C. They touch a card. I take it out, put it on top then to a DL and it honestly gets really good reactions. Just a quick thing to do

this club was created long before i came to highschool

imjust one of the guys representing it.

and to the person who suggested pamplets and stuff, we have all that and even a huge perty display board but i just needed some effects to wow people with, cuz last year there were some people that were just hooked and they stayed by us for the whole hour they had while looking at clubs instead of looking for other clubs they were interested in

even some simple changes hit hard
I know some tricks here are not impromptu, but they are very good effects for your situation. (tread carefully with stigmata. some people faint)

I won't say much but one simple question, when there are those that are interested, how do you know they won't simply learn the tricks and never do magic? Many people quit magic because of the effort it takes to actually be good.

i had sort of posted an answer to your question in a different thread, which i dont feel like finding so i'll reexplain

theres a curriculum sorta thing where (for card tricks at least) we teach the self working tricks for the first couple meetings, then after they can do those fairly well, we decide to teach them something that involves a move and takes a bit of practice and timing to get down. Its kind of like a weed out program where we eradicate all the people who want to be in the club to find out all our secrets and heckle the poop out of us. We dont teach the DL til like 8 weeks into the club and by then, we have an idea of who is really intersted because a lot of people dont stay til then. Once they learn the double lift, we teach them a few ambitious card routine concepts and have them create their own mini routine. along the way we may teach them some little tricks as well

finally, for the second semester in the year, we are left with only the people that are serious about it and want to excell in the art so for the second half the year we roam the halls after school and perform for teachers, students etc

I think It would be good if instead of just performing around the school you also left on weekend to perform to people in the town.

Even if it were there beforehand, I wouldn't join. I think it kills the image of magic. It really does. Also, you're not gonna get dedicated people. You're going to get people who just want to know secrets.

Those are my views.

club + any word = fail.

I was a big fan of the beatles until a idiot decided to do an 3 hour special on the radio called "the beatles club"... everyday.
