Let's say someone (probably me) were to make a performance DVD including music that was not created by me, would I be able to sell it or would I have to get rights and all that nice stuff?

You'd have to get a licence to use the music, written permission from the authors/copyright holders will usually suffice.
There's lots of royalty free music out there, but better yet create your own!

It is VERY difficult to create good music especially if you aren't gifted in the area... in the light of trying new things out.. what program would be best considering I do not play any instruments?
i would recommend a program called garageband. it has a bunch - as in a couple thousand - beats, riffs, sound effects and other stuff of that sort. you can play around and make your own music based off of those tracks or you can record your own music and add effects. hope that helps. good luck making music.

Hey, just wanted to ask something, how old are you? Now I'm going to make an ass out of u and me and assume your in the range of 13 - 16.
If I'm correct, do you really think you should be Selling a DVD? If you want to get your name out in your area, then you should be giving away promo dvds to people. Nothing good in life comes for free, there is always a cost in everything you do.
I'm sure people would agree with me its better to do/ give stuff for free to get your name out there. Once your name is out there, and people know your good, then you can start charging.
Just my thoughts.

No worries... I'm not going to make a performance DVD and just start selling it.. I meant that if I do make a performance DVD with music that wasn't created by me would that be wrong just in case in the future one would want to sell it? No I'm not 13-16... I'm also 18 and have been doing magic for about 5 years now... I totally understand where you are coming from and by no means take the 'bashing' in a negative way. It;s understandable with all the young people (as if 18 isn't young) trying to make a quick buck.... well I believe I fulfilled the word count by now so... Ohh and thanks for the input.. (no sarcasm)

Sweetness. With the whole Promotional thing, I think I found some decent threads over at E in the Working Magician forum bit. And there's some other decent ones over at the Magic Cafe. They're really helpful.
