Just returned from a private party gig and let me say wow...this was a great night.

It was a birthday party / adult gig at a bar with a closed room for the 50-60 people attending.

Most of the people were between the ages of 40-70.

I performed strolling magic with rubber bands, cards, and some mentalism.

I had a table of old ladies who were in a card club and they absolutely loved me and wanted to keep me at their table all night. Ha Ha. They were in their 70's and loved every minute of the magic. They were very respectful and had nice manners.

I had one big table of "cougars", hot moms, that were in their mid to late 40's and most of them were knock outs....wow. I think they were more interested in flirting and saying dirty things to me than enjoying the magic, however they did comment how good I was and tipped big. I'm not saying I am a stud muffin or anything but it did start to get a little awkward how up front they were about saying things. They were all drinking of course and weren't paying a bit of attention to their husbands who were across the room.

Then I hit up the rowdy group of single guys and husbands. They were my best crowd ever. They were fun and into every effect I had. They were going nuts and I was happy to say I fried them. They did not tip but they all wanted my business card for company bookings. This could pay off big later.

I had a great time tonight and received tons of compliments. I had a "big head" and adrenaline rush the entire ride home from the gig. I'm sure some of you know what I mean. All of your hard work and practice pays off on nights like these and you know why you got into this beautiful art of magic.

Because everyone was laughing, smiling and having such a great time....I found it very easy to find "off beats" to false shuffle, hold pinky breaks, etc without any stress. People were not burning my hands at all because I seemed so relaxed within the group.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my gig tonight. I love reading other performance stories as well so post'em if you have had any cool ones lately.

Awesome story man. I love reading these :)

Love it when I am relaxed performing, any tips on ice-breakers, or did they automatically accept you and were interested?

Thanks a lot.

Keep up the good work.

Best regards,

-Sanj

I would say that some tips that I have learned over the past year are do not approach the table with your cards in hand and say that you are a magician. Get to know them and see what type of people they are and if they even want to see magic. I had one table tonight that was in serious conversation with one another and clearly did not want to be entertained and I was fine with that.

I went to each table tonight with nothing in my hands and introduced myself not as a magician but as the "hired entertainment". This gives you a little more credibility and they spectators don't think they are getting ready to see Uncle Fred's 21 card trick.

Also...I never open with a card trick. I always start with a mismade dollar effect and then go into some rubber band magic, and finish with some mentalism and then cards towards the end. This seemed to work a lot better than opening with cards.

I performed 4-5 effects for each table and then finished with everyone around me as I used a wiregram, Banachek's Twisted Sisters ( People Went Insane ), Sloppy Triumph, and a few others that packed big.
