Remembering People's Names Is Important

I wanted to share some information that I learned today on a Johnny Ace Palmer DVD this afternoon. This is one area that I must admit I need to improve upon because frankly I am always just too excited to get into my set or other times I don't care what their names are and I'm ashamed to say that so from here on out I'm going to do a better job.

REMEMBERING PEOPLE'S NAMES

When you are performing for a small audience or doing table hopping one of the first things you should do is introduce yourself and immediately get their names as well.

People actually like and are flattered if you can remember their name during and after your performance.

Don't make excuses that you AREN'T good at remembering names.

Ways to help yourself remember their name are:

1.) Try to rhyme their name with something
2.) Make a Name association example: Johnny says when he introduces himself he says "Hello, My Name is Johnny "Ace" Palmer Ace like a card and "Palmer" like when a magician "palms" something
3.) Ask them a question. For example: If a female says her name is "Kathy" simply ask "Kathy, is that with a C or a K"
4.) or think of something funny like imagine that their are a bunch of "Cats" on top of "Kathy's" head
5.) Reaffirm their name by repeating it back to them
6.) Write it Down (I'm not sold on this one but Johnny swears he used to write down every person's name he performed
for)

Does anyone else have any name remembering techniques they do?

Just thought I'd share this topic as most of you experienced guys already know this stuff but some of the youngsters may need educated on.

Back in Time
You could just say their name a few times when you are performing for them. Like maybe around 3x casually to get it into your head. As for anything else, you're not going to remember everybody's names who you've performed for. Not even Harry Lorayne would be able to do that.

I've found while table hopping at restaurants or just stopping someone on the street that the majority of the time their name is going to be the name of someone you know or use to know. And when this is the case and let's say their name is "David," then I'll associate it with the kid back in 8th grade whose name was David, who's Dad made prosthetics, or "Rick" I had a boss several years ago named Rick, who still wore a mullet, or "Randy" I knew a guy named Randy, who alluded to possibly having sexual relations with farm animals (true story) etc....

It's always worked for me.

Hopefully this was some useful information.

Great tips. I use those a lot. For me the exaggerated imagry works wonders. When I intruduce myself and I don't want them to forget my name I will say something like "My name is Justin - as in JUST IN case you forget...." It works wonderfully to help them remember which makes them feel more comfortale talking to you later.
