So i was poking around reading about some playing card historical facts and came accross this.. I thought it was interesting and I'm currently thinking of ways to work it into a "story trick" heres the website

http://playing-cards.us/collection.html

Who would have thought the ace of spades would strike fear into the hearts of the Vietnamese...

Okay so when you go to this site scroll down untill you see this link

"US Playing Card Co. -- "Bicycle Poker", No. 808 Secret Weapon"

Let me know your thoughts

I read about this on the USPCC website about a couple months ago, here is what the USPCC says:

The Ace of Spades served a famous purpose in the war in Vietnam. In February, 1966, two lieutenants of Company "C," Second Battalion, 35th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, wrote The United States Playing Card Company and requested decks containing nothing but the "Bicycle" Ace of Spades. The cards were useful in psychological warfare. The Viet Cong were very superstitious and highly frightened by this Ace. The French previously had occupied Indo-China, and in French fortunetelling with cards, the Spades predicted death and suffering. The Viet Cong even regarded lady liberty as a goddess of death. USPC shipped thousands of the requested decks gratis to our troops in Vietnam. These decks were housed in plain white tuckcases, inscribed "Bicycle Secret Weapon." The cards were deliberately scattered in the jungle and in hostile villages during raids. The very sight of the "Bicycle" Ace was said to cause many Viet Cong to flee.

So the Vietnamese were frightened by this Ace because it predicted death and suffering...

I always knew the Ace of Spades was the death card, but understood it differently. I thought that the US Govt printed special cards for soliders and would put the faces of people they were after on the cards. From there, I always thought the the head of whoever they were fighting against was the Ace of Spades, meaning that the was the top person they wanted dead.

i remember a thread about this exact same thing a while back. i'll say what i said then, the concept that the vietnamese fear the ace of spades was a myth that was misconstrued amongst the americans and used as a morale tool to help out our soldiers. In fact the ace had absolutely no impact on the vietnamese other than to make you a real nice target in a green jungle. however it is true that the USPCC did ship thousands of decks made of entirely all ace's to soldiers and it did indeed encourage and help morale. however it is a myth.

if you read there is a barnd from the USPCC that has a swastica back. Doesnt that offend some people.

Which one has a swastika back? This was a very common symbol in the US prior to WWII. Coca Cola and the US Air Force both used swastikas before WWII. The swastika is a good luck symbol all over the Asian world, and I'm sure in Vietnam as well.

Your talking about something the DOJ did after we invaded Iraq. I have some decks. The Aces and Kings are Saddams sons and other top officials. Then the rest are various local Baathist leaders. They never did that in the Vietnam war.
