Hello,
First of all.
This just got out of me.

Im from belgium and i get sometimes really frustrated.
The problem with most of the 15-... year old people in belgium is that they don't get really astonished. I did this week a perfect 5speed (it's quite a strong effect) for 2 teens and all they said was a boring sounded "nice... "
A minute later they even said they knew the trick( believe they don't, not even close)

And that was not the only time and not only with me.

If people hear the dutch word for magic they start thinking and speculating about how you do tricks. They just can't sit back and just enjoy it.

I read a lot of things about the 'oldies'.
Well belgium is over populated by them.
Luckly their are people like us and some younger magicians.

Thanks for listening to my frustrations.

Hey,

Im from Estonia.
The main reason people in Europe dont give reactions like in the US is that the countries are small. People are not used to open themselves. Youe got to make them open them selves.
Its all about presentation and opening yourselfe to the audience. Im usually so open in my preformances that if someone asked a very close question i would anwser that because it makes them feel special to know that (i usually lie or tell another story).
Its all about you and audience managment...

For a month now.
I know it's short and maybey to early to say stuff like that. But I needed to tell this to someone.

Hello there! :D I do not live in Europe so I can't say, but I can't imagine that the place you live in will effect how people get astonished.

You are new to magic now so you may not be aware of presentation. YOU MUST PRACTICE PRESENTATION! Showmanship. Make sure you have the trick down. Make sure when your doing it, you are being a good entertainer. Just doing the trick is different than DOING the trick. I hope that makes sense to you. ;)

Practice for a camera. If you do not own a camera or cannot get one, do it for your mirror. Do it for your parents. If you can film some performances, maybe we can give you feedback. (That is what the media section was originally meant for on here. :))

Welcome to magic.

Just going to edit your thread title so people don't get offended. ;)

When you're new to magic your presentation can be quite bad and can make the effect boring to watch. When I first started I used to get a lot of 'eh, that's kind of cool' reactions. Now I get reactions ten times better often using the same effects I started with.

Simply doing a trick isn't enough to make your performance entertaining.

It is certainly to early. When you don't get much of a reaction it's usually the magician's fault.

Firstly you need to make sure you choose people who are going to be receptive, if people are in the middle of a conversation or look busy then they will be irritated if you interrupt them. Some people may have other things on their mind (problems at work or in their social life etc), this will make them unreceptive. Although, in your case I suspect it is your presentation.

On an unrelated note, you say you've been doing magic for a month yet you're working on the Clip Shift? This makes me suspect that you're not learning the basics properly and you're rushing on to more advanced material too soon.

Wait why are you working on the clipshift if you've only been doing magic for a few months. You're trying to run before you can walk.

I suggest you go back and relearn all the basics and work your way up to something as advanced as the clipshift.

This means don't try to learn it till you can do things like a Multiple Shift smoothly, Faros, passes. Zarrows and other sleights that are reasonably advanced. Which should take you a few years.

I didn't see him say anything about the clipshift...

A few months ago I got a similar reaction....I was bummed about it but honestly, it was the way I presented it. It was stale and didn't really have any patter that would connect with the person I did it with. So it bombed. Since then, I have been working on improving in this area (I'm sure we all can work on presentation no matter how long we've been doing magic).

Just keep working on it and the good reactions will come!

Maybe that's a good idea. But i'm not really hard training on that one. That's just to have some change. To have somthing where i can train when i am sick of all that basics slides...
