HELLO THEORY11!!!

There is a talent show coming up and a friend and I are planning to perform a tandem act and would like some suggestions. This has to be a maximum of 5 min. We know a variety of material:
Linking Rings
card manipulation
banana bandana
we have a homemade zombie
D-lights
we have wands disposable wands if you know what I mean for different types of tricks
and many other little tricks for moments here and there

if anyone has any suggestions of what we can do or if any other tricks that come to mind, please feel free to let us know :D

Just to be clear you only have 5 minutes to do your act?

If I read that correctly I suggest taking one of your effects and focusing on that with the presentation.

I Love card manipulations!! but I will stick with something the audience can feel identified..

Linking rings, vanishing bandana, zombie ball - all played out.
I've seen it 1,000 times before.

Try to show them something they haven't seen on tv.
Give them something to talk about after the show.
How many times have you've heard after the show - "OMG! Did you see how he linked the rings? How did he do that?" -Never.

Something to remember: Audience involvement couldn't hurt. It might even, dare I say it, make the show . . . fun.

"Hey look at me with my magic ball trick for you to watch" is okay. They'll clap at the end. But they'll know it's a stage prop that many magicians use though.
If your going on stage, make it count. It's only so many times a person can see the same trick and not get bored with it.
Where I'm getting at: Do something better!
Sorry if that sounded rant-like.

I like both the linking rings and card manipulation. But for a 5mins stage show, I would suggest card manipulation.

I am definatly with Mikk and Shane on this one five minutes is enough time to do done effect, or routine. If you were to take a look at Channing Pollock his act was essentially a you booked it or you didn't and you knew exactly what you were getting. For the most part he never really changed it up, if you are working with such a strict time limit you need to have a piece that plays like this. However in your shows you need to know how long things take and how to keep them moving so there is no dead time, this is where improv comes in.

Do the magician's version of Russian roulette. that is very crowd pleasing effect

I think a 5 minute Russian Roulette would leave the audience a bit ... confused and empty after the show. There simply isn't enough context for the audience's minds to settle on what exactly you're doing; magic or dare-devil.
And since you have a friend in the act, that opens up a whole new variety of possible effects. Just keep in mind that you should do 1 effect or so; be ready for that trick to either make ya or break ya.

Things to keep in mind. Good luck!
