Ok from seeing other peoples responses to your original post I obviously shouldn't have been confused you were implying what I was asking about. After doing magic for 15 years it insults me to think that you would think that your thinking is an acceptable way to approach magic. After spending months sometimes longer perfecting a routine do you honestly think that the notion of ever telling a lay person how the effect is done would ever enter my (or any other self respecting magician) mind? That is one of the most stupid things I have ever heard!
If you are struggling to get the reactions you would hope for from your magic then you should be looking at yourself and the effects your perform. I watched your sparrow video and its just a confused mess, so if you are performing that caliber of effect to a lay person no wonder your not getting reactions other than confusion. Go read greater magic or the books of wonder and then look at yourself and you will probably see where you are going wrong, rather than just exposing tricks to lay people. And by doing that you are just contradicting what you said, your thinking is by doing that your are bringing a level playing field with you and the spectator all your doing is showing how clever you are. Do you honestly think that by showing a layperson all the moves in a trick they will think what a nice guy he is, there more likely to think your a show off demonstrating something that they can't do.
The only point I agree with you on is magic shouldn't be a puzzle, but with proper presentation, stagecraft ect the notion of a puzzle should never come into an effect. Yes spectators will naturally want to try and figure out a method so its your job to close down an lines of logical thought about how something could be done to the point where you are showing them something impossible, not a puzzle and hence you get the reaction of astonishment or whatever you want to call it.
I don't know how long you have been doing magic for but from they the things you are saying and showing it tells me right now your are doing it for the wrong reasons. You need to learn a lot more from technique to theory before you can ever start throwing around the ludicrous notions you are saying in this thread. Magic has been my passion for the last 15 years of my life, and I've dedicated a lot time and effort and made sacrifices for it, so it truly angers me the hear someone speak the way you have, and think that your views are of some merit. If you have ever read any of my other posts you will know I never rant or get angry but this has really rubbed me up the wrong way.
