adobe premiere CS3 is the best in my opinion. Layout is simple, awesome audio editing as well. And Adobe After effects with premiere is a great combo. Unlimited possible effects to create.

But if your looking for simplicity, and something you can learn to use in a few hours, get sony vegas. Whole bunch of preset effects, but audio effects are not good with vegas.

Final Cut Express all the way. It's simple to use, and you can do awesome things with it. The price is pretty reasonable as well. If you have a Mac, it's the only way to go.

Vegas is actually a fantastic audio editor. So sick of people talking about stuff they have no idea about.

For the record, Sony Vegas started out as an audio editing application. It is known for its audio capabilities. Only later were the video editing capabilities added to make it a full package.

The audio tools that come with Vegas aren't spectacular. However, the software accepts VST effects.

There is no shortage of free, good quality effects that you can plug into Vegas. I have a "typical" chain of three effects that I load up above and beyond the default EQ -- a De-Ess plugin, a gate, and compressor. All three are available for free, legally, and can be used as plug-ins for Vegas by basically dumping them all in the same folder then pointing Vegas to that folder.

Out of the box, Vegas can leave a lot to be desired. There is a lot of good potential in its acceptance of plug-ins.
