Why did they discontinue PANIC?

Title says it all

I kinda wonder why Aaron Fisher decided to do that? That was a pretty good project if you ask me. I sent him an email about it and how to get gimmicks (I'm glad I got one at MagiFest 2009)

No choice now... PANIC!!!!!!!

Well, the contract with Aaron was up and if he had a choice he would've loved to keep Panic here at T11, I think. But he had no choice. The United States Playing Card Company, changed their rules so that no one can alter the backs of their playing cards. And apparently The gimmick altered the nback, hence making it discontinued.

Yes, that's correct. His contract with T11 is up so he can sell it anywhere he wants. But towards the bottom of the page it says:
Please Note: We only have access to a limited number of copies of Panic. When the current stock is gone, this effect will be discontinued.

So these are the last copies, after this, they are all gone.

well as of very recently Aaron is releasing it on his site http://www.aaronfishermagic.com/panic.htm

From that page:

I guess he's just selling off his remaining copies.

TBH, it was a really great idea, but not entirely my style. I bought it, tried it, but ultimately, sold it. I think it could have been better if they applied the rough/smooth concept to the gimmick and made it more interchangeable.

Well...if you have Panic, then you can figure out how to make extra gimmicks for it...I've had to.

This email conversation was done between me and Master Fisher:

Dear Master Fisher:

I hope this message finds you well. I was recently informed that the theory11 website has also discontinued the Panic DVD. Is there a certain reason that this had to be done, since I am fully aware of the sheer power of this trick? Also, where will I be able to find additional Panic gimmicks? I greatly appreciate your reply.

Sincerely,
Sean Skyhawk

His reply:

Sean,

Thanks for writing about this. It's been two years since Panic first was released by Theory 11 - and their license recently came to an end.

In that time - the original 5000 gaffs that US Playing Card Printed for us have been largely sold - some as refills, mostly with the DVDS.

My understanding is that there are only enough gaffs left to marry the remaining DVDS, and currently, whether or not US Playing Card Co. will continue to print gaffed backs is seriously in question. In fact, the word on the street is they won't.

So right now, you and I are in the same position - Panic is an endangered species. If and when it comes back, it will be with a new teaching tool - this DVD will be extinct as well with the sale of the final copy of this run.

So for you AND for me - the only way to get at the final stock of panic gaffs is with the DVDS. There are no refills extras left to be had. It's frustrating I know, but i take some solice in the fact that i DO feel the trick is worth 25 bucks, and I DO take care of my gaffs.

I hope this answers your questions. I really appreciate the fact that you love the trick as I do - pretty soon, those of us that do it will have a truly exclusive miracle on our hands.

With Warmest Regards,
Aaron Fisher

So I guess that does it. Someone mentioned that one could recreate the gimmicks; can he/she PM me about it? It seems pretty important.

Mikk

Holy **** is that a smart move? That's gonna incite riots all over the US FOR SURE. Especially in California.

I can see the headline now: "Unrest in San Francisco as California Magicians Loot the Local Playing Card Warehouses"

From what I understand when I was reading a few back and forth letters on The Magic Cafe, that's not entirely correct.

Only gaffs that modify the card backs (IE, half of the E gaffs from both the regular/ultragaff decks, Panic, Twilight Angels, and a few others) are discontinued.

Doubles/Blanks are not officially discontinued, but production has been put on hold as they're changing presses/the location of their plant. They need to catch up production on normal decks of cards before they get back to printing gaffs.

The thing is they don't want modified backs as it supposedly dilutes their trademarks. Apparently, modified FRONTS are ok, as well as alternate colorways. I think their issue was more with things like the "eight of hearts" Ultragaff reveal or stuff like that.
