    Advice on becoming professional

The vast majority of magicians have to do everything themselves. They develop the effects, write the scripts, put things together into a show, rehearse the show, market the show, book the show and perform the show. To become a professional (someone who gets paid for doing magic) you need to...

How do you deal with audience challenging you?

I think the question was more trying to figure out a method than challenging your powers. A spectator thinks they figured out a trick if they understand one part of the method (while a magician is stumped if they can figure out everything except one part of the method). With that in mind, a...

All the necessary card techniques and handling!

A bit of a different perspective... We learn best when there is a reason for learning. Learning and practicing sleights for the sake of learning and practicing sleights is more difficult than learning them to perform an effect. Magic is a performance art. Learn sleights so that you can...

Help identifying card trick I've been thinking about for 25 years!

As far as I'm aware, there isn't a marketed or published trick that is performed as you explained it. There are several ways to do something similar but each would involve additional steps not in your explanation or slightly (pun intended) different procedures. Simply put, the magician you saw...

Close up Mats: Yes or No?

So, whether I use a close-up mat depends on what I'm performing and were I'm performing. It is good to have one, especially for coins or cups & balls. I third the TCC pads. They are nice.

    No Stupid Questions

For those who don't know, William Ellsworth Robinson was an American magician of Scottish descent who performed as a Chinese magician named Chung Ling Soo in the early from 1900 to 1918. Robinson is more infamous for the one magic trick that went wrong than the rest of his act. In 1918, he...

Spectators always figure out Omni deck. Help?

I don't remember if the way I performed it was the standard performance. Nonetheless, the omni deck always ended up in their hands with them doing some unexpected magic when I asked them to "focus on your card and just blank out all the other cards in the deck." I'd reach in their hands and...

    Quitting Magic

For me, magic has always ebbed and flowed. During the pandemic, I found myself more immersed in magic than ever. Now that things are returning to normal and the weather is nice, I find my focus on many of the activities that I couldn't do during the pandemic. There are two problems with...

    Just a bit of fun.

Well done. The most noticeable thing is that YOU were interested in what you were doing. So much magic is done with the magician viewing their performance as something trivial. If you treat your magic as interesting, your audience will do the same. As @Al e Cat Dabra said, the performance...

Card prediction to Walnut in Discoverie of Witchcraft, circa 1584

Great idea. There is a lot of great old stuff. I'm assuming you tear the corner off their card, vanish it and then have the corner reappear in the walnut? I'm hoping at some point you use the line "that's nuts!" I wonder if you could use an entire card from some of the Double Decker decks...

Alright, how do you open a deck of cards?

Open the cellophane at the top end by pulling up on the folded parts. Slide the deck out. Use a scissor to trim the cellophane at the point where you want it. I like to cut it above the pull tab, so it covers all of the deck when I put it back in. For the sticker, push down on the sticker so...

I need some advice on releasing an effect

Does the other effect have the same presentation regarding the Crying Boy painting? If so, then I wouldn't release it. The presentation is the best part of the effect, so unfortunately "great minds think alike." Also, is the 50,000 number based in fact? It seems awfully high. Similar to...

What is the best option for a card fountain?

I haven't tried the inexpensive ones. I have a Dave Powell card fountain which can be built into a card box. It works well but it is a bit knacky and practicing with it, well, is a bit time consuming considering the clean-up.
