    Building a magic act

It is funny you posted this... was thinking about doing a series of workshops in 2022 on this but I didn't think there would be any interest.

    Very nice... in many ways.

Getting a borrowed deck into stack

My bad... or double bad... First, "Either Or" is a John Guastaferro effect, not John Bannon. It is from John's book One Degree. Second, "Either Or" can only get into a partial (maybe 4 to 6 cards) stack. I'm wondering why you would want to get into a stack using a borrowed deck? I honestly...

I think it is a new show on Amazon Prime.... The Wheel of Dreams... or maybe... hmmmm.

How do I figure out if a trick I came up with has been performed before?

Correct. Just using an existing sleight - double lift, Ghost Count, Houdini Change - doesn't make the effect unoriginal.

    Favorite card force?

I think that the classic force works best when you have a spectator able to pick a card. The 203rd force is the best in-the-spectator's-hands force. Ultimately, the best force is the one that works best for the context of the effect.

How do I figure out if a trick I came up with has been performed before?

@MrM3511 I'd be glad to take a look (although it may take some time to get back to you since I'm away from my magic library for the weekend). I would consider something original if is an original method, an adaptation of an existing method, an original combination of methods into an effect or...

    Need help with this

As @DavidL11229 said, it is hard to see what he is doing with the cards before the dealing... I suspect purposefully. The method is standard with a minor subterfuge. If you know basic card magic, the odds aren't stacked in your favor, but with an even-handed dealing style you too could make...

How do I figure out if a trick I came up with has been performed before?

@MrM3511, there is very little in magic that is original. Most of it is adaptations and variations of something previously developed. To find out something is original, you need to have a good education in magic, know how to do magic research and have the resources, such as books, to actually...

    Another packet question

So, Packet Killer has a deck that comes with it that allows you to do a lot of packet tricks. If you have Bannon's High Caliber, there may be some effects in there that you can use the cards from Restless Colours for... I'd have to check. If it was me, I'd just pack four or five packet wallets...

    “Wild Card” recommendations

The version I use comes from Simon Lovell's Packet Killer (which I believe is close to Garcia's original). Jim Tyler's Mirrors has a neat premise using "mirrored" cards. The seminal work on the effect is Frank Garcia's Wild Card Miracles book. @Gabriel Z.'s list from Genii is a good starting...

Please Help Me Find The Name Of A Trick I Just Saw

OOTW as put out by Paul Curry in 1942 as a stand alone booklet. Curry self published Magician's Magic in 1965. That book is currently available as a reprint and has the story in it of how Harry Green performed it for and fooled Winston Churchill. In my opinion the best versions are by Eugene...

Please Help Me Find The Name Of A Trick I Just Saw

A perfect example why combining two effects doesn't make it stronger but instead dilutes the effect. I understand why the Triumph portion was necessary due to the shuffled deck, but a straight forward OOTW with a false shuffle would be just as powerful. Also, there are better methods of OOTW...

Looking for some books -- cards and packet tricks

For packet tricks, I love Bannon's High Caliber but it has been out of print for a long time... but it you can find one for a reasonable price. Simon Lovell's Packet Killer DVD and deck combination is great for the classic packet tricks. Craig Petty's Blank DVD has a number of packet tricks...

    Advice on becoming professional

One suggestion is to break larger goals into smaller goals which meet the "A" in SMART goals in that they are easily attainable. So "finish Card College in two weeks" becomes "finish Chapters 8 and 9 this weekend." When you finish that goal, go back to this: It is easier to put the work...
